Reasons why tomatoes are a â € € œmustâ food for the heart
Introduction
The Mediterranean diet Traditional, rich in tomatoes, tomato products, and other carotenoids has been associated with a lower incidence of chronic diseases heart disease. Recent scientific studies have shown that people who regularly eat tomatoes and tomato products are less likely to suffer heart attacks than those who nâ € ™ t make tomatoes part of their diet.
Tomatoes and arteries
Tomatoes are essential in the fight against heart disease because they contain lycopene. Lycopene has been identified as the substance responsible for the antioxidant effects of tomatoes in many studies, recent research suggests that consumption of tomato products prevents oxidation of LDL cholesterol, the type œbadâ € â €. Oxidized cholesterol is considered the first important step leading to the formation of plaque in arteries, thus crises heart.
What is lycopene?
Lycopene is the red pigment in various fruits and vegetables like guava, pink musk, watermelon, pink grapefruit, and red peppers, but that comes mainly from tomatoes and tomato products. As a powerful antioxidant, lycopene prevents the oxidation LDL cholesterol caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly unstable and destructive molecules that subject our cells to oxidative stress, continuous damage causing cell death. When radicals kill or damage enough cells in the body, the body ages and dies. In a study investigating the effects of lycopene from tomato in the oxidation of cholesterol, Agarwal and colleagues provide the participants with two servings per day of Tomato Juice, sauce spaghetti, and concentrated lycopene for one week. The study showed a significant reduction in oxidized LDL.
Lycopene may also reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood. For three months, 60 men received 60 mg of lycopene by Daya € "the equivalent of 1 kilo of tomatoes. At the end of the treatment period, results showed a reduction of 14 per cent of LDL cholesterol in the blood.
Absorption lycopene
An important consideration in studying lycopene is its absorption by cells. Our tissues have to swallow lycopene the food we eat and do in our cells before they can be put to some use. Research has shown that the level of lycopene bodies in tissues of our € ™ is a better indicator of disease prevention than the amount of lycopene eat. People who have a high concentration lycopene in the tissues have a lower risk of heart attack than those with low levels. In a study of two weeks by Micozzi, subjects followed a diet containing no lycopene. At the end of the second week, the level of lycopene in the blood of these people has decreased by 50 percent and the oxidation of cholesterol was increased by 25 percent.
Research has also shown that lycopene is better absorbed if the meal contains some fat.
How to increase the absorption of lycopene
Lycopene is more easily into the blood if the meal includes a source of fat or if tomatoes were heated, as in the case of the tomato sauce and tomato paste. The heat changes the chemical structure of lycopene and makes it ready for our cells to swallow. A Once inside cells, accumulate in our bodies. A study published in 1998 showed that the cells to better absorb the lycopene of tomato products from fresh tomatoes.
To increase the level of lycopene in the tissues of your body you can do several things:
â € ¢ Process the tomatoes with heat. An example might be the tomato sauce, tomato sauce or Tomato Soup.
â € ¢ eating fresh tomatoes with fats like olive oil.
â € ¢ food products that contain lycopene with other food antioxidants. A example would be eating tomatoes with other vegetables such as salads or eat a piece of fruit dessert. Use olive oil and lemon juice as dressing and will have the perfect combination of lycopene and antioxidants.
In a study by Tyssandier and colleagues, subjects were supplemented with 96 grams of tomato paste daily for three months. Volunteers avoid foods rich in tomatoes for the next three weeks. The results show that included tomato paste in a normal diet, increased blood lycopene, beta-carotene and lutein. Avoid tomato products for three weeks, decreased levels of all antioxidants and total antioxidant capacity of blood.
More ways to include tomatoes in their meals
â € ¢ Make a point to always have tomatoes at home. Bright red, ripe tomatoes have more lycopene than green or yellow.
â € ¢ Always include tomatoes in salads. Use olive oil and lemon or vinegar for vinaigrette.
â € ¢ Dining pasta with tomato sauce.
â € ¢ Add some tomato slices to your sandwich.
â € ¢ Rub half a tomato on the bread you eat the food.
â € ¢ Always keep canned tomatoesâ € "â € added salt Oeno € â €" hand. They are very useful when you are in urgent need of them for soups or sauces. One of my favorite brands is Muir Glen Organic € "â € Oeno salt added, â € of course.
â € ¢ If possible, visit your local Farmers Market ™ € and find local tomatoes.
The pizza is a good combination of tomato and fat?
Although the pizza is not the combination ideal fat and lycopene, because the fat in cheese is largely saturated, the wrong kind for our arteries, you can eat pizza in moderation. Ask the server or cook to go easy on the cheese and hold the sausage and ham.
