Homeschooling in the Garden

Do you dream already on the field work this spring? To get your hands dirty and finding little green shoots appear by magic? Why not use their time planning the garden as the last study education unit at home? Do not think of gardening as something that is outside of their school time. Think of it as something that can enrich.

Involving children in research. Gardening will experience wonderful activities that can really bring learning the lives of their children. This is something that children can enjoy. You need not live in the country to have a garden. You can start with just a small spot in your yard, containers on the porch, or even a small herb garden on the windowsill. When I was a child, had a nanny so great grandmother had a garden in your yard. My mother often commented on how, when she picked me up late in the day, Mom Linda are all children, sitting under a shade tree to break the beans. We thought it was a wonderful gift to "get" for work in his garden.

Create a book of garden plans all in one place. Start by working together to create a list of all fruits and vegetables you eat or enjoy. You can plant the same crop varieties that ripen at different rates and no surprise if cultivate plants that mature at different times, or plant a crop and then another in the same space. Succession planting is a great way increase your harvest to maximize the use of space and time. Often, you can start with a cool season crop like lettuce, tomatoes continue to grow in the heat, then finish the season with a third culture that thrives in the fall, like spinach.

It is now time to start planning, however. Select your plants. Take the design of your garden. Gather the materials you need. If you planning a container garden, keep an eye on the containers that can be used. If you make a lasagna garden, you start saving newspapers and cardboard boxes. To use the compost in the garden, start your own worm bin or compost pile to get rid of your kitchen waste and improving the quality of your soil. Start building raised beds or collection of materials so you can start seeds indoors. You can also incorporate history into their studies in the garden. Study of the Victory Gardens of World War II and discover how Americans rose 40 per cent of its vegetables, allowing the War Department to buy mass-produced vegetables for troops abroad. During this time, the focus was to make the garden of a family or community effort, not a chore, but a pastime and a national duty. We can learn much from history. Cicero once said: "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." Make a little gardening with your children this year. No green thumb is required, only a desire to learn and willingness to get their hands dirty!
