Container gardening for vegetables
CONTAINER GARDENING FOR THE VEGETABLES
The production of crops not applicable Only in the land or gardens, but can now grow in the heart of the town or simply at home, even when only a limited space.
If your home has a sufficient area of sunlight – a requirement for growing vegetables can be grown successfully. What are the places that can be used for container gardening? You can use your patio, balcony, terrace, roof, deck, windows, roads, etc.
Be aware of requiring light sun for each crop. For leafy vegetables, sunlight required should be about four hours every day for fruit vegetables, it takes at least 7-8 hours of sun per day, and root vegetables need about 6 hours of sun per day.
And in addition to producing their own vegetables a more secure, and attacks by pests and diseases may be much less common. You can also improve soil conditions adding soil amendments such as manure, compost, food and other essential nutrients for plants.
Everything in your home that are considered as waste can be composted, used up. Even water from household waste can be used to water your plants.
In other words, gardening is regarded as the container that makes practical use of unnecessary things.
What Containers are ideal for container gardening?
Growing vegetables can be run on any type of containers such as cans, plastic buckets, tires, car parts, cement bags and bags of food, water, plastic bottles, cans of a gallon the engine block, container of milk, or bamboo cuttings in containers that have been abolished. Even shells, bracts of coconut banana, coconut leaves is ideal for containers of materials, particularly for short-season vegetables such as pechay, mustard, lettuce, etc.
Good growth of container must have three important characteristics as suggested Relf (1996);
- They should be large enough to feed the adult plants.
- They should have adequate drainage.
- We must keep the products that are toxic to plants and people.
The containers that drain poorly can affect the success of a garden container. It is therefore essential to have their containers above the ground or any other type of support to lift containers such as plates, hollow blocks or something to provide a space under them to allow excess water to flow freely.
For installations More important, you must use large containers and small containers for use by small plants.
Small containers (1-2 gallons) are adapted for lettuce, spinach, mustard, peppers, radishes, green onions, carrots, beans and cherry tomatoes. Container-sized (3-10 gallons) are the best to eggplant, while for larger (over 10 gallons) are good cabbages, cucumbers and tomatoes.
For most plants, containers should be at least 15 cm deep minimum especially for shooting seasonal vegetables.
Recommended size and type of container / Crop
5 gal. window box – bush beans, beans
1 plant/5gal.pot, 3plants/15 gal. POT-cabbage, Chinese cabbage
5 gal. box window, at least 30 cm deep – the carrot
1 plant / gal. Jar – Cucumber
5 gal. Pot – eggplant, tomato, okra
5 gal. pot window – Lettuce
1 plant/2gal. jar, 5 gal plants/15. Boats – Onion
5 gal. window box – Pepper, Spinach
Plants grown in containers depends on the type of soil mix to ensure maximum growth development. It is a duty that must provide the best composition of the soil media to the eventual return of their efforts. Failure to provide the plant nutrients in the food they need in their time growth is the result in pro-poor growth, thin, stunted plants and the results of their failure.
The ideal soil mixture for containing the vegetables grown are:
- Must be light and porous.
- Must be easily emptied any excess water.
- This should be able to contain the high tide.
- Must be free from soil-borne diseases, nematodes and insect pests.
- It should provide the proper balance of nutrients for plants.
The best combination of soil media should compose his next mix vermiculite executive summary of horticultural peat, limestone, superphosphate and complete.
Compost can also serve as excellent culture medium.
In countries where the media cited are not available, you can make your own potting soil by mixing 1 part loamy soil or compost, 1 part sand and powdered coconut.
If your country is the production of rice you can substitute powdered coconut charcoal rice husk (charred). But this must be carefully sterilized to kill harmful microbes that are deadly to plants.
The Sawdust Wood is another way that could be used in the preparation of culture medium in the absence of dust, coir and must also be sterilized.
Planting and transplanting
Before entering the process of planting, to give any your attention to the selection of seeds to be used as planting material. Good quality seed should be your first concern.
Good quality seed has the following characteristics:
- without damage
- free one Another mixture with other varieties
- disease-free seed-borne
- and with vigor and good germination capacity.
To obtain a seed quality and reliable, you should buy certified seed producers and seed suppliers.
All vegetables undergoing transplantation are excellent for container gardens. Transplants can be purchased at local nurseries or other Gardeners success in their locality.
Before transplanting, fill the plastic container or sprouting to the preparation of culture media by the proportion follows: 60% of charcoal of rice hulls (char), 30% coconut coir dust, 10% chicken manure (60-30-10 ratio).
Failing materials mentioned above in your country, you can use the old media of soil preparation – 1 part sand, 1 part compost, garden soil and 1 part (1-1-1 ratio). Be sure to sterilize before the seed is planted. It is certain to kill micro-organisms that can cause damage to plants.
Also can buy half GroWell loan sold in shops of local agriculture in their respective countries. Learn from experts in agriculture available in your area.
Once the media are always ready, fill the holes in the germination pots or containers. Press the middle of the room with fingers slightly every hole filled with the medium. Then comes the sowing of seeds.
In some seed planting techniques should be followed to ensure germination:
I Watermelon (seeded) (Citrulis lunatus). Soak seeds 30 min .- 1 hours in water above. Incubate with cotton cloth wet. Spread seed and cover. Place in a makeshift band designed for 24-36 hours. After this period, sow seeds in the seeds per hill I. The seeds should be level in the ground, guided by a finger or a stick of 1 cm. For the type of seeds, the procedure is the same as the first head, but the point on the embryo nail clippers to cut off aid before inserting the ground. Cut late germination of seeds accelerated.
The bitter gourd / Ampalaya (Momordica charantia). Soak seeds for 30 min-1 time. Cut the tip near the embryo and sow the seed with the depth of ¾ of the earth for 1 seed per hole.
The UPO (Lagenaria siceraria) and Patola (Luffa cylindrica). Cut the tip covering only about embryo and sow 1 seed per hole.
l squash (Cucurbita spp.) Soak seeds 30 minutes-1 hour. Then pinch the tip near the embryo and sow 1 seed per hole.
the pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena) and tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum). Sow seeds directly germination seed tray 1-2 per hole.
Pecha L / Pechay (Brassica fishing), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), botrytis (cauliflower Brassica oleracea var.) and broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica). Sow directly to the germination of seeds 1-2 hole.
The cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and Honey Dew Melon (Cucumis melo). Sow seeds directly into the tray 1 seed germination of each hole.
The carrot (Daucus carota) and Raddish (Rafanus sativus). sow the seeds directly in the field of 2-3 seeds per hill.
L asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) and bean (Phaseolus limensis). Sow directly in field of 1 seed per hole.
The maize (Zea mays). Sow seeds directly in the field of 1 seed per hole.
the papaya (Carica papaya). soak seeds for 30 minutes-1 hour, then planted in the plateau of germination seeds to 1 of each hole.
l Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). Sow the seeds directly in the field of 1-2 seeds per hill.
Size cultures containing a. specific
- Medium – beans, lettuce, carrot, cabbage, broccoli
- Large – Cuccumber, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, okra, squash, papaya
- Small – onion, parsley, radishes
Light requirements
- Sol – beans, cucumbers, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, okra, squash, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, broccoli Papaya
- Shade - lettuce, onion, parsley, radishes
Fertilizer Requirements
To get the correct amount of fertilizer for vegetables, we must analyze the media mix soil. And if you can, compost or inorganic must be used.
The combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers would be much better with the correct proportion, as the demands of the plant.
When the use of inorganic fertilizers, you should prepare a basic nutrient solution by dissolving 2 cups of complete fertilizer in 1 gallon of warm water.
A solution is increasingly being prepared by diluting 2 tablespoons of the solution based of 1 gallon of water.
Start the application by making the solution 2-3 tablespoons of culture media in the soil around the plants during transplantation.
The frequency in May of implementation vary from one culture to another, but one application per day is sufficient. There is desirable that all fertilizer used leaching mix the irrigation once a week with tap water to free flow through the holes in the bottom.
This practice prevents the accumulation hazardous materials in soil media. If you want to use organic fertilizers, you must use fresh or 2 / 3 compost in all growing media.
If organic and inorganic fertilizers should be used, at least part of the culture media must be made and a spoonful of the solution increasingly applied at least once a day.
If we use the average synthetic blend, which is already enriched superphosphate and complete subsequent fertilization may not be necessary for crops early maturing.
For late crops, daily application of the growth solution is required, until maturity or just before harvest.
Water management
Water is the life of the garden containing plants. It is important that you should not neglect this requirement. Good water management is vital for a successful pot.
Basically, a day is sufficient for crop irrigation container. However, for vegetables grown in small containers may need watering 2 times day.
Plants grown in clay pots need more frequent watering because the water pots are more porous and allowed to drain later booster.
If the culture medium seems too dry and the plant shows signs of wilting, the containers should be grouped so that the foliage creates a blanket to assist in the shadow of the earth and cool.
The poor drainage of culture media or flooded container can carry on condition that the results can lead to death from lack of oxygen.
To ensure you have healthy plants, always check the containers once a day and twice on hot days, dry and windy and feel the earth to determine if it is garbage.
To reduce evaporation of water to plants in pots, you must apply materials such as black plastic mulch or making windbreaks.
You can also install drip irrigation system or drip at the base of the plant if you think you can attend their plants every day.
Pests and diseases
Fight against pests and diseases in the container needs assessment of your care, because the misuse of pesticides can cause environmental damage, particularly children which often can get closer to your container plants.
To be sure, you should implement integrated pest management (IPM). This approach focuses on the systematic management appointed parasite which means that to prevent problems before pests and diseases appear.
How can this be?
This is done by monitoring pest populations, pest identification, and the choice of combination of control methods to keep pest populations to a minimum. These methods include cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical (which is the last resort to be applied when the condition is serious noticeable).
Select the insect and disease resistant varieties vegetables. Avoid attracting insects in the garden or plants that are susceptible to pests. Beans, peas, cucumbers, spinach, lettuce and squash are more resistant insect pests.
l of water facilities properly to keep them healthy. Fertilize the soil and plants to reduce fine competition for moisture and nutrients.
Remove the weeds to conserve soil moisture and flush out the parasites.
l Encourage natural enemies of pests such as predators and parasites. To attract beneficial insects, West Damsel Bug, Ladybug, Green Lace Wing, and the minute pirate bug in your garden by planting small flowering plants such as daisies, cosmos, marigold, and clover. Sure the flowers are in bloom throughout the growing season.
Avoid the growth of the same kinds of vegetables in the year on year rise after year. A cycle of 4 years of rotation is recommended.
Exclude pests by using the fibrous deck line, and other barriers such as plastic bottles and neck of the plant.
Remove the part of the infested plant immediately. Remove all containers from waste plant after the harvest of all crops.
L Use traps to disrupt the reproductive cycles of insects. Yellow sticky boards to catch winged aphids, whiteflies and leafhoppers.
Pest l Handpick or liquidate plants with a jet of water from a garden hose. Kill insects by putting them in soapy water.
l If all other methods of control do not work, the least toxic insecticide control includes plants like neem and pyrethrin. Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil can also be used to control insects. Always identify pests before choosing a pesticide, and according to label directions.
Harvest
Harvest varies with the vegetables. Leafy greens can be harvested at the desired size sheet is required for all uses that are intended. Others grow vegetables sheet after the age is the month. For vegetables, fruits, such as, Luffa, cucumber, eggplant, beans, okra and UPO harvested when their size is large, but soft. For varieties of squash, which is done either matured or large, but tender on the basis of user preferences.
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli should be harvested when the head is already packaged. The peppers and tomatoes are harvested when the fruit begins to ripen.
If you are the pot of vegetables grown for home consumption only, you can capture only part of the plant and keep the rest for future use. But if you think that has more than enough for a family use, you can collect all and give or sell to their neighbors.
Never allow your plants to give flowers to harvest that, unless their goal is to collect seeds for future sowing.
Indices of maturity of some vegetables
- Potato, onion, garlic – Tops begins to wither and drop-down list
- Cowpea, Sita, green beans, peas, dressing, dress sweet pea square – Well-filled pods that really complement
- Okra – Full-sized fruit with tips that can be easily opened
- Lima beans, peas – Pigeon Well-filled pods that are beginning to lose its freshness
- UPO, Luffa – immature (if a stamp can easily penetrate)
- Tomato – Seeds of slip when the fruit is cut, green or pink turning
- Pepper – deep green turning dull
- Melon – Color becomes creamy yellow background, produced a dull sound when struck Halloween
- Cauliflower – Potato compact (more so from age couples and clusters of flowers begin to drop)
- Broccoli – Bud compact group (more mature, if in bulk)
- Cabbage – Compact heads s (more if Administrators mature cracks)
- Sweet corn – Wrap miniature milk sap when it enters the nucleus
- Eggplant, ampalaya – desirable size is reached, but wet
- Honeydew – cream scented white
- Squash – Fairly large with dry leaves
- Watermelon – hollow sound when it hit the bottom and turns yellow
- Water spinach – leaves in its broadest and Longest
The problems in container gardening
In the container gardening that some may you encounter problems that hinder their daily activities. This is sometimes visible when you do not plant due to negligence.
However, you can avoid these problems if it is religiously observe your plants closely. Pests and diseases little can be seen clearly if we witness the emergence of plants closely. Only plants will be affected once they come close and touch them.
Some of the symptoms, causes and corrective measures must be observed:
the Great thin and unproductive. The plants get enough sun and the excessive supply of nitrogen. To fix, you must transfer the containers in one place where there is enough sun.
L yellow below, the color of the poor, and the strength of the fault. The plant receives too much water and low fertility. To correct this, you must reduce the irrigation intervals and check the pots for good drainage.
The the plants wilt even with sufficient water. The plants have poor drainage and aeration. To fix, use a mixture of soil with a high percentage of organic matter. Increase the number of holes in the container for good drainage.
L cooking or making Fire leaves. The middle part is rich in salt. To correct this problem, you must be leached from the container with water at intervals regular.
growth of the phosphate stunted, sickly, and purple leaves. The temperature is low and falling. To correct you must move the container to a warmer place. Increasing the level of phosphate in the basic solution.
The holes in the leaves and distorted shaped. The plants are infested with parasites. To correct this you must use any chemical or biological insecticide insects.
The spots on leaves and dead or dry oxide appearance. The plants are affected by disease. To correct it should eliminate the disease has affected parts or the whole plant in a serious condition. You can use chemical pesticides, if the disease is in early stages of infestation.
