Heirloom vegetables â € "Part 1 – Tomatoes
When I think of heritage vegetables, romantic notions of the hills swept wind and sunflower fields come to mind. I guess a solid wood table arranged with linens and wine glasses rustic thin, each capturing a sunshine and reflecting on the summer palace of oranges, reds and yellows that make up a plate of freshly prepared Caprese salad. It Nothing like the combination of tomatoes, fresh basil and buffalo mozzarella cheese. Mix in a little olive oil, salt and pepper and were eminently fair gods. Of course, you can do with normal tomatoes, but the difference in taste is like the difference between cheese and cardboard. Tomatoes provide exotic flavors, color and biodiversity for life from the garden to the table.
By definition, a legacy is something that spreads from generation to generation with the hope of preserving the memory of the past. In the case of tomatoes, varieties of about 100 years are still in circulation today to thank you for producing reflective of the past seeds that are carefully and given to their children. Seed banks and catalog companies that specialize in providing gardeners curious legacy has opened the door to a world usually of the variety available public.
Traditional seeds have survived the test of time, exposure and ecological changes and disease and are therefore more resistant to pests than many of their younger counterparts. White: If you are looking for something new and different, try Wedding Nebraska – half white large size of the tomato. Unfortunately this has not done as well in my coastal garden. A slice that almost completely cover one slice of bread, and the color was all the small yellow seeds. This was one of the most interesting that I Tomatoes grown for years.
