Traditional seeds and plants
As a kid, we all visit my grandmother in the country, was a great moment. I remember especially his tomatoes and aligned in a row on the edge of the window and all of our visit ripened perfectly, what a shot "Luck" that was! For many years I tried to find that flavor, but without success. I figuredvqvax that Grandma had a kind of secret, until my father told me the reason. You see, the secret of Grandma was simple, it has kept the seeds of their plants for next season and beyond, she collected seeds, and now 30 years in practice became the collection of heirloom
To are increasingly more and more vegetables for the estate, in my case, I am immediately taken back to my grandmothers' kitchen and the beautiful days of my childhood. There are, of course, has always been the legacy of the collection of seeds, but were more or less in small groups or tight social networks (although before the Internet gained sentence). The strongest support for the heritage vegetables has resulted in seed catalogs now offer these elements, and while the modern hybrids are bred to be stronger, or to give better performance, the legacy of growth means that you can also be taken to the old days.
It designating a plant as a relic?
Well there are three main features Plant Relic
Almost all seeds are the heritage open pollinated varieties, and seeds of these plants are normally on the characteristics a single mother plant. True Type develop their heritage seeds. This leads to people like my grandmother who loves fruit year after year.
Some perennials Heritage propagated by cuttings rather than seeds, but are still considered as family heirlooms, their seeds may not produce exactly the same varieties. That said, there are still exceptions to this rule, however, these are exceptions and not the rule.
Ideally, you should be able to trace the source back fifty years or more. Again, if this range is arbitrary and not etched in stone, but much remains from further afield. As a guide, before World War 2 heritage seeds as seed catalogs these hybrids dumped were "better". Is not that always the case, you never know what you have until it disappears.
The last characteristic is history. Most heirloom family history, as the grandmother kept the seeds and sent them to my father and my father came to me, other family and friends have done this, which makes the seed property. Many of these seeds, of course, came to us through the migration across the continents, heirlooming there and then it was not a thing I wanted was something I had to do. Fortunately we now enjoy, as we have such a wide variety traditional seed .. available
Thank you to my family line, my children are able to visit graddads home, and enjoy the same fruit that I did When I was your age, and I must admit. When nobody is looking, I slipped into the kitchen to eat a ripe tomato from the window, close your eyes, bite, and come home … Granny ….
