How to start with vegetables. garden (Northern Illinois)?
I have no idea how to begin and I would try a small garden This year, some herbs (cilantro, basil, oregano, thyme, lavender) and maybe some greens (spinach, chard, kale) and tomatoes definitely I love the heritage. I have some books and a nice big yard, but does anyone have tips on how to avoid or what is absolutely necessary?
Am in northern Illinois as well. I'll start my first garden as well. Where I am, I have a strong clay soil. I am preparing to build at least one, maybe two raised garden beds. I intend to 8'Lx4'Wx18 "D. I want to build Composite wood to last. If you only plant lines are likely to change your soil with organic matter such as compost. It takes a lot of compost to amend the mud. Clay does not flow well and if it dries, it will be as concrete. It does not allow air to circulate around the roots of plants. Is not conducive to things more. Arena allows water to flow too fast and has no nutrients. You can view the square foot gardening. It is intensive gardening in a small area. You can start small and expand their knowledge from there develops. Besides, I live in McHenry.
